Valdez. Oops change of plan.

There was no sight of land when we awoke this morning which was very surprising given that were we due to berth at Valdez at 8 am. The mystery was solved 30 minutes later when the Captain made an announcement.

Apparently, last night there was a medical emergency on board which required a passenger to be airlifted to the mainland. The rescue helicopter is based at the Coastguard base at Kodiak, so they requested that the ship change course and head towards Kodiak whilst they organised the helicopter.

With this diversion and the time taken to evacuate the patient, there is now insufficient time to go to Valdez.

So we are now at sea, again, and will arrive at Hubbard Glacier tomorrow, at around 10.30 am. Apparently it is so busy there that you are allocated a time slot. We are only a few hundred Nm away, so speed is now down to 10 knots and we have a bit of time to waste.

it is a very calm day day at sea with flat seas, about 10 knots of breeze and an almost tropical outside temperature of 6 C. We went for our usual 6km walk around the deck with beanies and gloves, and had another pleasant dinner at the Chefs Table Restaurant tonight with a Norwegian based menu.
