At Sea on our way to Alaska
Having left Japan last night we are now sailing in the Sea of Okhotsk, the sea between Russia and Japan and location of the Kuril Islands, the southern four of which are disputed territory between Russia and Japan. This morning we passed through La Perouse Strait between Hokkaido and Ostrov Sakhalin (a long island just off the Russian Coast and only just North of Hokkaido) and at 12 noon were at roughly 46 degrees N latitude, heading ENE.
Originally, our cruise was destined to stop at the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, but this was quickly cancelled when Russia invaded Ukraine. So now we have a long trip across the Pacific Ocean to Dutch Harbour in Alaska.
The temperature now getting a lot cooler. It was 9 C outside today when we did our laps of the ship for our morning exercise, but we are still lucky that it is not raining and we have moderate seas. Visibility is down as it is becoming quite hazy with very little wind.
It will be interesting to see how our satellite internet access holds up as we move further North. There has already been a significant slowdown in access speed over today.
In order to deal with changing time zones, they have decided to move the ships clock forward an hour each day to minimise having one big change, so at 2 pm today the ships clock moved to 3 pm bringing dinner time an hour earlier.
Tonight we dined at Manfredi's, the Italian specialty restaurant. It was excellent and we will book again.
Tomorrow we will still be in the sea of Othotsk and hopefully will reach the Kuril Islands (an archipeligo s of 56 volcanic islands between Hokkaido and Kamchatka Peninsula) in daylight.
