At Sea in the Sea of Okhotsk
We awake to grey skies, a bit of light rain and a significant drop in outside temperature.
This morning there is a very interesting lecture on a little known incursion that the Japanese made into the Aleutian Island in WW11 about 6 months after the invasion of Pearl Harbour. Their intention was to try to stop the Americans from building air bases there which would put American bombers within striking distance of Japan. It was also designed to divert US forces so Japan could concentrate on the capture of the Island of Midway. Unfortunately for the Japanese, the US had broken their communication code and were listening in on their plans, relocating 4 aircraft carriers to Midway to await the Japanese attack.
Thirty minutes later there was another presentation on the Viking Cruise Program for the next couple of years, encouraging bookings for future cruises.
At noon today we are at 48 degrees 39 minutes North, and it is a chilly 2 C outside, with sea temperature the same. Not a good idea to fall overboard. We are moving along steadily at 14 knots, in no particular hurry.
It is a cloudy day wth a light mist, seas are still moderate, the wind is NW at around 20 knots.
As we edge our way towards the Kuril Islands it looks like the weather on the other side of the island chain is a bit ordinary. Hopefully it is moving away from us faster than we are approaching.
After lunch we decided to brave the weather and go out on deck to do our daily laps. It is now 1 C, so we rug up with beanies and gloves and did our 15 laps. There were a few other people doing the same.
We managed to get to the show tonight and the entertainer was very talented. His show was titled "The American Playbook" and he sang a lot of old well known numbers, backed by band than can only be partly seen in the photo below. He was a great pianist and vocalist and his final number "American Pie " was a great way to finish a .well put together show
